A Canadian Company Made A Penis Version Of Goop's Vagina Candle But It's For A Good Cause
A Canadian company is riffing off a new Gwyneth Paltrow product and it’s officially the war of the genital candles. The This Smells Like My Penis candle is a play on Goop’s vagina one but it’s actually for a good cause. And don’t worry, it doesn’t actually smell like a penis.
The new home decor item comes from a Montreal-founded ad agency, TAXI, and is pretty much exactly the same as the Goop one in its packaging, except for the phallic part. It also costs more to buy than the vagina one.
The penis candle retails at $100 while the Goop one goes for $75. There’s a good reason it costs more though, the $25 price difference illustrates the gender pay gap in Canada.
On average, women in Canada earn 75 cents for every dollar that men make.
“It's time to burn the gender pay gap,” the website for the unique product stated.
Alexis Bronstorph, executive creative director for TAXI, told HuffPost Canada that this is meant to bring people’s attention to the inequality in pay between men and women working in Canada. They’re also doing something to fight it.
All the money from sales of the unique item will go to the Canadian Women’s Foundation which funds programs that address gender-based violence, economic security, girls’ empowerment and inclusive leadership.
On January 13, Goop's This Smells Like My Vagina candle was available for purchase online, and it was both popular and unpopular at the same time.
It first had people questioning why anyone would make this or want it, and then, it completely sold out online.
It is made with geranium, citrusy bergamot, cedar, Damask rose and ambrette seed.
That’s probably not exactly what her vagina smells like but according to Paltrow, the fragrance started as a joke between her and a perfumer when she said at one point during testing, “Uhhh… this smells like a vagina.”
As for the phallic version, Bronstorph said, “We actually didn’t want to give it a scent, but rather point out how the functionality of a candle like this is no different however it smells, as a reminder of how ridiculous the wage gap is in today’s day and age.”
The Canadian take on the vagina candle will soon be available for purchase here.
