Snowfall sends Alberta drivers a winter warning
Alberta RCMP and AMA are urging drivers to ready their vehicles and emergency kits for the winter as snow fell across central and southern Alberta on Friday.
The Alberta Motor Association says cold temperatures can affect how a vehicle runs, meaning basic checks are important to carry out this time of year. AMA recommends keeping vehicles fuel tank at least half full, since cold weather lowers fuel efficiency and spare fuel helps during an unexpected delay.
Winter tires are another important step, the association says, because they grip and stop better than all season tires in snow and ice. Drivers should check tire pressure often because
it can drop when temperatures fall.
Road science supports the advice. The Canadian Automobile Association says all season tires lose grip below 7C because the rubber stiffens in the cold. Transport Canada says black ice can form between 4C and -4C, and they say bridges and overpasses often freeze before roads do.
The AMA says drivers should pack a kit with booster cables, a flashlight and spare batteries, blankets, warm clothing, non-perishable food, candles, matches, first aid-supplies and a charged cellphone. If a vehicle breaks down, the kits can help keep people safe while they wait for help.
Alberta RCMP are also asking drivers to slow down and make safe choices. Police say impaired, distracted, fatigued and aggressive driving cause the most serious crashes. They suggest setting navigation and music before travelling, not while the vehicle is moving.
"We're seeing a concerning trend in fatal collisions on Alberta roads," said Cpl. Mike Warman of Alberta RCMP Traffic Services. "All road users have a part to play in road safety."
The reminders come during a deadly year on provincial roads. Alberta RCMP say 2026 is on track to be the worst year for road deaths in a decade. As of Aug. 31, there were 192 fatal crashes on roads the force patrols.
Drivers can check road conditions by calling 511 or visiting 511 Alberta online before they leave. RCMP warn drivers that highway conditions can change fast this time of year.

On va voir ça. »

Police investigating double murder in Quebec's Bas-St-Laurent region
Quebec provincial police are investigating after two women were shot and killed Thursday evening in the parking lot of a restaurant in Rivière-du-Loup, in Quebec's Bas-St-Laurent region.
Witnesses contacted emergency services at around 10:45 p.m. after hearing what they believed to be gunshots near the restaurant parking lot.
Responding officers found two women inside a vehicle who were seriously injured and appeared to have been shot.
One of the victims died at the scene, while the other died a short time later in hospital.
No arrests had been made as of Friday morning.
Quebec provincial police are still working to identify the victims and say it's too early to discuss the circumstances surrounding the crime.
Newly-appointed Domestic Security Minister Guy Jr. Lapointe offered his condolences to the loved ones of the two victims.
“Violence claims too many victims in Quebec, and beyond each tragedy, it is the public’s sense of security that suffers every time,” he wrote on social media.
Lapointe, who was sworn in as minister on Wednesday, said he was “determined to combat violence and ensure that every Quebecer can feel safe.”

A TikToker Called Out The Big Ice Cube In Her $18 Cocktail & It Backfired On Her So Fast
"This was highway robbery!"
If you’ve gone out for drinks recently, you know that dropping $18 on a cocktail that’s mostly made of ice is pretty standard.
However, that’s not how TikToker Mabel Martinez felt when her server dropped off her drink with a king ice cube in it, so she turned to social media and put the restaurant on blast.
“This restaurant expected me to pay $18 for a block of ice,” wrote Martinez over top of her video.
“The waiter was super nice, and he ended up giving us a full glass,” Martinez continued in her video caption. “But this was highway robbery! Not okay! Full review coming soon!”
Martinez regularly reviews New York City restaurants on her TikTok, but her cocktail review of Hidden Leaf didn't turn out the way she expected.
TikTok users absolutely dragged her in the comments, with many refusing to give her any room for her big ice cube issue.
One commenter asked: “Damn… you never been out before, huh?”
"Tell us its your 21st birthday without telling us its your 21st birthday," said a second person.
“Sweetie, you’re paying for the 1.5 oz of liquor,” wrote another.
“Yes, that’s how a cocktail is made,” added yet another critic.
Yikes.
Most of the comments called Martinez out for not knowing the basics of how a cocktail is made, which includes putting a big ice cube in the glass to fill it up.
“Comment section isn’t going the way you thought it would,” reads one comment.
One helpful person explained that “you get the same amount of alcohol regardless of the ice” and that other drinks have extra ingredients, making them look fuller.
“I feel like every month; people are discovering cocktails are only 1.5 or 2oz of liquor. The norm across the industry,” wrote another comment.
So the next time your drink comes with a giant ice cube in it, just remember: you're getting the alcohol you paid for, and the ice is just for show!
