Stelco cites foreign imports, 58% plunge in U.S. steel exports to defend layoffs
Stelco Inc. says Canadian exports of cold-rolled and coated steel to the United States have plunged 58 per cent compared with pre-trade-war levels, while continued foreign imports put pressure on domestic producers.
In a seven-page letter to Canada's industry minister obtained by The Canadian Press, Stelco president Paul Simon says Canadian exports of those steel products to the United States fell by 226,000 tonnes in the second quarter of 2026 compared with the 2024 quarterly average.
At the same time, he says imports accounted for 45 per cent of market share for those products, despite Ottawa's efforts to protect the industry by restricting steel imports.
Simon says a combination of declining exports to the United States, weaker domestic demand and continued foreign steel imports has shrunk the market for products made at Stelco's Hamilton Works by more than one million tonnes annually — roughly twice the plant's historical annual production of cold-rolled and coated steel.
The Oct. 9 letter came in response to Industry Minister Mélanie Joly's demand that Stelco explain how it will honour job commitments made by its U.S.-based owner Cleveland-Cliffs when it acquired the company in 2024.
Stelco announced plans late last month to lay off up to 500 workers at its Hamilton Works and Lake Erie Works facilities in Ontario.
Simon, also Stelco's general counsel, says the company is proceeding with plans to idle its Hamilton finishing operations despite Joly's warning of possible legal action. He says the layoffs do not violate its binding employment commitments as U.S. tariffs and continued foreign steel imports have dramatically changed market conditions.
In a statement posted to X on Oct. 10, Joly says Stelco's legally binding employment commitments remain in force despite changing business strategies or market conditions, adding that all options remain on the table as government lawyers review the company's response.

Dominion Dynamics to jointly produce Ukrainian drones in Canada
The Ottawa-based defence company Dominion Dynamics is partnering with Ukrainian robotics company Tencore to start building its ground-based drone vehicles in Canada as early as next year.
The two companies signed a memorandum of understanding at a defence conference in Washington, D.C., today which outlines their plans to manufacture Tencore's Termit drone in Canada and install Dominion's software in the vehicles.
The Termit drone, which runs on treads and looks almost like a miniature tank, has been deployed to Ukraine’s front lines for operations that would be hazardous for humans, such as resupply missions and mine-laying.
The federal government has been pushing for joint production of drones by Canadian companies and Ukraine's battle-tested defence industry.
Prime Minister Mark Carney and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met in Calgary last month and signed a joint declaration on defence production.
Dominion is also independently developing its own autonomous collaborative platform: drones guided by humans that fly alongside fighter jets, such as F-35s or Gripen fighters.

Canada joins allies in expressing regret over postponed Palestinian elections
Canada has joined allies France, the U.K. and Australia in expressing deep "regret" over the postponement of Palestinian presidential and legislative elections.
The votes were set to happen next month but Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has delayed them until September 2027.
In a statement, Canada and its allies say the delay deprives Palestinians of the chance to vote and elections are an important element of the Palestinian Authority's commitment to reform.
The statement also acknowledges what it calls significant challenges and impediments to the ability to conduct elections in a manner consistent with international standards.
While Canada was among a group of nations that recognized the state of Palestine last year, that recognition was predicated upon several conditions, including elections being held in 2026.
The Palestinian Authority has maintained it is unable to hold a vote in Gaza as long as the war continues.

Tony Romo Proved He’s The Best Sports Commentator Last Night With His Hilarious 'Rocky' Quotes
If you're familiar with the Dallas Cowboys, then you're familiar with Tony Romo, it's just that simple. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has taken up several hobbies since his days on the field, including sports commentating! After lots of practice, "Tony Romo" and "sports commentator" have become something you can often hear in the same sentence and he was hitting an ultimate high last night.
Fans had a lot of good things to say about Romo's commentating skills last night, especially with him throwing in the enthusiastic Rocky reference.
We'll get to that later.
It's not uncommon to see former NFL players on the other side of the sports world once their career on the field comes to an end, but it is worth celebrating when they end up being great at it.
When you're as big of a legend as Romo is, you certainly have the upper hand.
Twitter user CoachTeixeira tweeted "Tony romo with the greatest commentary of all time!"
They followed up their claim with a line that Romo used during his commentary of the Texan game. "'It’s like watching Rocky when he’s getting punched over and over, he’s not losing he’s getting mad!'”
If there's an easy way to win people's hearts when it comes to commentating, it's quoting one of the greatest movies ever made.
Certainly, other factors play a role, such as voice, tone, and overall knowledge of the sport that's being broadcast.
Sports fans are a tough crowd to please, so sometimes even that isn't enough!
Twitter user aubreyybadger tweeted "Me listening to any other commentator vs. me listening to Tony Romo," with a hilarious dog meme below it.
The dog is clearly upset in the first photo, and blissful in the second.
Now that Romo has gotten such a great reaction from fans, his current free agent status may be changing very soon.
Rumors have it that ESPN is preparing a massive offer for Romo to leave CBS as an analyst and become the lead analyst for ESPN's "Monday Night Football."
It'd be silly for him to turn it down, so it's just a matter of time before he's back in the big leagues!
Like @DavidWysong_ tweeted above, "Every game is 100 times better when Tony Romo is commentating it."
You've got that right!
