Liberals to table 2026 federal budget on Nov. 5
Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne says the Liberal government will table its 2026 federal budget on Nov. 5.
The upcoming fiscal plan will be the second delivered under Prime Minister Mark Carney and comes as Canada's economy faces sharp headwinds from U.S. tariffs and other geopolitical forces.
Since taking office, Carney has tried to reorient federal spending away from the day-to-day operations of government and instead focus borrowing on an aggressive infrastructure agenda.
Canada's economy showed some resilience in the second quarter but growth is under fresh pressure after the collapse of trade talks with the United States in August.
The parliamentary budget officer expects federal deficits will be an average of $3 billion higher annually over the next five years than the office projected in June.
But a stretch of higher gas prices tied to war in the Middle East has also lifted federal revenues in the near term, which the PBO expects will lower the deficit for this fiscal year.
More coming.

QuickQuotes: Leaders react to Alberta referendum results to remain in Canada
Albertans voted overwhelmingly to stay in Canada on Monday in a historic referendum vote.
In early returns, about three in four Albertans said yes to Confederation, while about one in four said they wanted the province to hold a second, binding referendum on leaving.
The separation question was one of 10 put to Albertans. The other nine focused on immigration and the Constitution.
Here's what some Canadian leaders are saying.
—
"Thank you, Alberta! I’m very pleased to see the initial results from Elections Alberta show widespread support for remaining in Canada. Albertans have voted for a stronger Alberta in a united Canada.
"Thank you to all Albertans who took time to vote on these critically important referendum questions."
Alberta Premier Danielle Smith
—
"It's a great day for Canada … I'm thrilled that Albertans have chosen unity. They've chosen to build together. They've chosen to continue to take care of each other, to move forward together with purpose, high ambition.
"I'd like to thank all of the volunteers who supported the election, of course those who campaigned on all sides, the electoral volunteers who were still counting some of the votes, above all, Albertans for turning out in numbers, participating in the democratic process."
Prime Minister Mark Carney
—
"At a time when our country is under threat and when we need to come together as Canadians, this result represents a clear rejection of the politics of division.
"Well over one million Albertans came together to give us something all too rare these days: a moment of hope.
"We know things are tough in Alberta, from health care to the cost of living, to the embattled education system and so much more … But as so many Albertans have shown us, we don't fix our problems by turning on each other."
NDP Leader Avi Lewis
—
"Canada is stronger with Alberta as part of it, and last night’s results show the overwhelming majority of Albertans agree with this. Many Nova Scotians have strong ties to Alberta, either having worked there or with friends and family going to their province to help build up their industry.
"Here in Nova Scotia, we’ll keep doing our part to develop our own natural resources, create opportunities and contribute to a stronger Canada."
Nova Scotia Premier Tim Houston

Carney says Alberta's choice of unity is 'a great result' for Canada
Prime Minister Mark Carney says it was "a great result for Canada" when Albertans chose unity in a referendum on Monday.
Carney says he spoke to Alberta Premier Danielle Smith about the results this morning.
In the historic referendum, voters chose in overwhelming numbers to remain in the country that made Alberta a province 121 years ago.
In early returns, about three-quarters of Albertans said yes to Confederation, while one-quarter said they wanted the province to hold a second, binding referendum on leaving.
Carney says he and Smith also talked about additional support for people affected by the tragic fire at CFB Wainwright in Alberta before turning to the referendum results.
He told reporters they discussed moving forward in the spirit of co-operative federalism, including on the issue of immigration.

Tony Romo Proved He’s The Best Sports Commentator Last Night With His Hilarious 'Rocky' Quotes
If you're familiar with the Dallas Cowboys, then you're familiar with Tony Romo, it's just that simple. The former Dallas Cowboys quarterback has taken up several hobbies since his days on the field, including sports commentating! After lots of practice, "Tony Romo" and "sports commentator" have become something you can often hear in the same sentence and he was hitting an ultimate high last night.
Fans had a lot of good things to say about Romo's commentating skills last night, especially with him throwing in the enthusiastic Rocky reference.
We'll get to that later.
It's not uncommon to see former NFL players on the other side of the sports world once their career on the field comes to an end, but it is worth celebrating when they end up being great at it.
When you're as big of a legend as Romo is, you certainly have the upper hand.
Twitter user CoachTeixeira tweeted "Tony romo with the greatest commentary of all time!"
They followed up their claim with a line that Romo used during his commentary of the Texan game. "'It’s like watching Rocky when he’s getting punched over and over, he’s not losing he’s getting mad!'”
If there's an easy way to win people's hearts when it comes to commentating, it's quoting one of the greatest movies ever made.
Certainly, other factors play a role, such as voice, tone, and overall knowledge of the sport that's being broadcast.
Sports fans are a tough crowd to please, so sometimes even that isn't enough!
Twitter user aubreyybadger tweeted "Me listening to any other commentator vs. me listening to Tony Romo," with a hilarious dog meme below it.
The dog is clearly upset in the first photo, and blissful in the second.
Now that Romo has gotten such a great reaction from fans, his current free agent status may be changing very soon.
Rumors have it that ESPN is preparing a massive offer for Romo to leave CBS as an analyst and become the lead analyst for ESPN's "Monday Night Football."
It'd be silly for him to turn it down, so it's just a matter of time before he's back in the big leagues!
Like @DavidWysong_ tweeted above, "Every game is 100 times better when Tony Romo is commentating it."
You've got that right!
