Toronto Mosquitoes Are Carrying West Nile Virus And It's Kind Of Terrifying

The first case of West Nile Virus in Toronto for 2016 has been confirmed.

It's official - mosquitoes in Toronto have tested positive for West Nile Virus for the first time in 2016, according to Toronto Public Health.

Of 43 mosquito testing traps set up across the city, two tested positive for the virus.

West Nile Virus manifests itself in the body between two to 15 days after being bitten by a mosquito carrying the virus. Common symptoms include high fever, vomiting, joint pains, rashes, and swollen lymph nodes. In relatively rarer cases, West Nile Virus could cause neurological damage and encephalitis (inflammation of the brain), which could lead to death.

Though the risk of contracting West Nile Virus is low, Toronto Public Health still advises all Toronto residents to take the necessary precautions to protect themselves from mosquitoes. This includes (and is not limited to) wearing light coloured, long-sleeved clothing, using insect repellant, keeping screens on doors and windows, and staying away from areas where standing water is prevalent.
