Trudeau Just Explained Why He Called A Federal Election During The COVID-19 Pandemic

Trudeau says this may be the most important "moment" since 1945.👇

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has explained his reasons for calling a snap election in Canada, describing the moment as "maybe the most important since 1945."

On August 15, Governor General Mary Simon accepted Trudeau's request to dissolve Parliament, triggering Canada's 44th federal election.

Speaking from Rideau Cottage, the Liberal leader explained his decision to call an election during the fourth wave of the COVID-19 pandemic in Canada.

"The decisions your government makes right now will define the future your kids and grandkids grow up in," he said on Sunday. "So in this pivotal, consequential moment, who wouldn't want a say?"

Trudeau continued, "Who wouldn't want their chance to help decide where our country goes from here? Canadians need to choose how we finish the fight against COVID-19 and build back better."

During the press conference the PM faced a series of questions from reporters about the timing of the election, which is set to take place this fall. "Canadians deserve their say, and that's exactly what we are going to give them," Trudeau said.

He added, "So to the other parties: Please explain why you don't think Canadians should have the choice? Why you don't think that this is a pivotal moment?"

When will the 2021 federal election take place?

All of the federal party leaders are expected to kick off their election campaigns on Sunday, August 15, although politicians have been in campaign-mode for weeks.

Canadians are slated to head to the polls on September 20, which means the campaign will be just 36 days long. This is the shortest possible election period under federal law.
