Trump says he expects Canada deal within weeks

With just hours to go before his import bans on certain Canadian goods take effect, U.S. President Donald Trump says he thinks he can make a trade deal with Canada in the coming weeks.

Speaking to reporters in the Oval Office today, Trump said he thinks the Canadian side will contact him in the next three or four weeks, apologize and agree to a "fair" deal.

Trump's bans — which affect some alcoholic drinks, dairy byproducts and motorcycles, among other goods — are set to begin at 12:01 a.m. ET Tuesday.

It's the latest escalation of the trade war since negotiations between the two countries ended acrimoniously last month.

Trump has since hit some Canadian goods with 50 per cent tariffs, removed others from U.S. federal procurement and signed an executive order to rename Lake Ontario as Lake America.

Canada-U.S. Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc's office says that the top priority remains "protecting and supporting Canadian workers, farmers, families, and businesses from these unjustified actions."
