Twitter Is Officially Allowing Users To Write Even Longer Tweets

140 characters are so yesterday.

Twitter has officially shaken things up on their platform. As of 9PM yesterday, Twitter has taken away its 140 character limit, and doubled it. Meaning that you can now tweet up to 280 characters to the twittersphere.

After testing out the feature in September, the social media platform said that they found that it wasn't being abused and by user and therefore rolled it out as a permanently change. The feedback on the change has been strongly mixed. Many users were not thrilled with this change, while other are straight up conflicted!

In addition, Twitter found that many of the users that had tested out the new feature only used up to to 190 characters and not the full 280.

In a comment made on the Telegraph UK, the product manager Aliza Rosen said, this feature allowed for "more engagement, [...] more followers, and spent more time on Twitter." Plus, the those testing the new feature said they were more satisfied in the way they got to express themselves on Twitter.

While the new character limit is universal,  Japanese, Korean and Chinese language users are still limited to 140 characters due to the fact that their alphabet allows people to say more in fewer characters.
