Union Station Is Turning Into A Horror Scene This Weekend For A Massive Emergency Drill

It will be the largest emergency exercise to take place at the station!

Torontonians planning to travel out of Union Station this weekend should be aware of a large-scale emergency exercise that is scheduled to take place on Nov. 2, 2019. According to Metrolinx, the simulation, which is in partnership with Toronto’s Paramedic Services, will be the largest-joint emergency exercise to take place within the station.

“Safety is critical to everything we do at Metrolinx, and it is important to regularly test our emergency preparedness to ensure our staff and first-responders are ready in the event of any type of crucial incident at Union Station,” explained George Bell, Metrolinx VP of Safety and security.

The drill is expected to begin on Saturday evening and end in the early hours of Sunday morning. According to CTV, the crown agency has hired 150 actors to pretend to be seriously injured. Smoke will be disrupted at the platform level as several emergency vehicles, and first responders will be on-site to act out the response protocol.

“It is not an actual emergency, and therefore, it is important, and the public should avoid calling 9-1-1 to ask questions,” a warning in Metrolinx’s news release states.

Although surprising to some, this sort of drill isn’t the first of its kind in the city. A similar-minded exercise, featuring emergency sirens and simulated gunfire, occurred earlier in October at Billy Bishop airport.

Thankfully, the exercise will not cause any disruptions in day-to-day transit services. GO Transit buses and trains, the UP express, VIA Rail, and TTC services will continue to operate as usual during the drill.

A temporary sidewalk will be in place to keep pedestrians from interfering with the event, and road closures will be in effect in areas surrounding the station during Saturday evening and Sunday morning.

It's also worth noting that anyone who wishes to avoid seeing high-volumes of emergency activity, which could induce stress, are being warned to avoid the area.
