B.C. jury finds Adam Mann guilty in 2024 home-invasion murder of Tori Dunn
A man accused of killing a Surrey, B.C., resident during a home invasion in 2024 has been convicted of second-degree murder, in a case that triggered calls for bail reform.
The BC Prosecution Service says Adam Mann was found guilty by a jury in New Westminster, B.C., on Wednesday.
Mann is set to appear next Thursday in court to set a date for sentencing.
The attack happened on June 16, 2024, at 30-year-old Tori Dunn's home in Surrey's Port Kells neighbourhood, where she was stabbed and died from her injuries.
Mann's DNA was found on the handle of a knife that also carried Dunn's blood, but Mann told court he picked up the knife on the side of the road before police arrived and arrested him.
The case generated considerable public interest because Mann was facing an unrelated aggravated assault charge and was slated to appear in court in the matter, but had been released on bail.
Dunn's family launched a petition calling for a legal review of what led to Mann's release and for changes to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
NDP Leader David Eby had said in his capacity as premier in July that he had asked his team to reach out to the Dunn family to discuss the case and to find ways to support their calls for reform.
The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team said in a statement in June that Mann, an Ontario resident, was found by Surrey police while they were on their way to Dunn's home.
Mann was once deemed an "unmanageable risk" unsuitable for community supervision, in a pre-sentencing report after being convicted of a home invasion in Ontario more than a decade ago.
Court records in B.C., Ontario and New Brunswick show Mann has a criminal history dating back decades.
In 2009, he was sentenced to 12 years in prison for robbery and weapons offences in a home invasion. He unsuccessfully appealed that conviction.
The Ontario Court of Appeal ruling in 2010 said Mann had racked up 22 previous convictions by the age of 25, including violent offences involving firearms and robberies.
The ruling said a pre-sentence report on Mann was "very bleak," and that he once described stabbing a female victim as "like a knife going through butter."
The report said Mann was "not suitable for community supervision, as he appears to be an unmanageable risk while in the community."
In December 2014, Mann was convicted of assault after spitting on two employees of the Atlantic Institution in Renous, N.B., where he was incarcerated.
Online court records in B.C. show Mann also has a long criminal history in the province.
In 2021, he was found guilty of publication of an intimate image without consent, an offence that occurred in Abbotsford.
In March this year, Mann was found guilty of possessing a weapon for dangerous purpose, and wilfully resisting or obstructing a peace office. He was then found guilty of breaching a probation order on June 5.
Eby had previously said Mann's release had raised questions because he was facing criminal charges and Crown prosecutors had urged a judge not to release him back into the community.
A statement from B.C. Attorney General Niki Sharma on June 28 said the government would look at what happened and push Ottawa to "ensure the federal Criminal Code is responsive to public safety needs."

Ottawa gives Stelco owner 15 days to address alleged violations or face legal action
Ottawa is giving the U.S. owner of Stelco Inc. a 15-day deadline to address alleged violations of binding commitments it made when it purchased the Ontario steelmaker two years ago or face potential legal action.
In an 11-page letter Thursday, Industry Minister Mélanie Joly accuses Cleveland-Cliffs of failing to honour six binding commitments made when it acquired Stelco, including employment guarantees.
She also accuses Cleveland-Cliffs of advocating for U.S. tariffs on Canadian steel despite its commitment to support Canada's steel industry, then using those same tariffs to justify layoffs.
Cleveland-Cliffs announced plans on Sept. 28 to lay off up to 500 workers at Stelco's Hamilton Works and Lake Erie Works in Ontario, citing U.S. tariffs and challenging market conditions.
Joly says the company must address its alleged violations, prove it has not broken its commitments or explain why it has failed to meet them.
If the company fails to comply, she says the federal government may apply to a superior court for remedies including an order requiring Cleveland-Cliffs to divest control of Stelco.
The letter discloses the exact employment commitments Cleveland-Cliffs agreed to in 2024, including to maintain an annual average of at least 1,766 full-time-equivalent unionized workers and 603 full-time-equivalent salaried workers.

Quebec Superior Court hears arguments to suspend Montreal bylaw banning insults
Lawyers are asking Quebec Superior Court to suspend a recently-adopted bylaw banning insults against employees of the city of Montreal, including police officers.
The bylaw prohibits insults, harassment, threats, abuse and intimidation, as well as offensive and aggressive behaviour.
Justice Eleni Yiannakis heard arguments from lawyers representing an association for progressive jurists and the St-Michel legal clinic Thursday morning.
Lawyer Sibel Ataogul argued the bylaw is too broad and encroaches on fundamental freedoms, including the freedom of expression, and is against public interest.
Lawyer Dardia Garcelle Joseph argued that the bylaw will mainly apply to interactions with police and can lead to serious harm to those already marginalized.
Lawyers for the City of Montreal are expected to argue in the afternoon.
Yiannakis stressed that she will rule only on the request for the injunction and not on the constitutionality of the bylaw.
