Twitter has taken the unprecedented step of locking President Donald Trump's official account after his tweets about the U.S. Capitol riots.

In his posts — which have since been hidden by the social media platform — Trump once again repeated lies about the 2020 election and called the rioters "very special" while telling them to leave the Capitol and go home.

Twitter locked his account because they said Trump had broken their Civic Integrity Policy, which says users must not use Twitter "for the purpose of manipulating or interfering in elections or other civic processes."

"This includes posting or sharing content that may suppress participation or mislead people about when, where, or how to participate in a civic process," the policy states.

In his now-hidden tweets — one of which was a video statement — Trump said the riots are "what happens" when "a sacred landslide victory is so unceremoniously and viciously stripped away."

Trump will be locked out of his account (which means he can't post any messages) for 12 hours, by which point he must have deleted the tweets in question.

If he doesn't, "the account will remain locked," Twitter said.

Trump has consistently tweeted lies about the 2020 election and Twitter has often added fact-check notices to his messages.

A former creative writing student testifying in author and former UBC professor Steven Galloway's defamation trial says she was "shocked" and "horrified" at language used in a mass email by a fellow student investigating misconduct allegations against Galloway.

Cara Woodruff, a UBC creative writing graduate, says in the ongoing trial of Galloway's defamation lawsuit that she received an email in November 2015 from Chelsea Rooney, who had been tasked with collecting complaints against Galloway but has now apologized for spreading unproven allegations against him.
