A Massive Chunk Of California's Pacific Coast Highway Has Collapsed Into The Ocean (VIDEO)

A storm caused the road to fall into the Pacific.

A massive chunk of California Highway 1, also known as the Pacific Coast Highway, collapsed into the ocean late last week.

The huge piece of road near Big Sur was wiped out by a winter storm that brought heavy rain to California.

Debris from the hillside above the highway "overwhelmed drainage infrastructure, flowed across the highway, and eroded the road resulting in the complete loss of a segment of Highway 1," said the California Department of Transportation (Caltrans).

Drone footage of the gaping hole was shared by the Monterey County Sheriff's Office, and the damage is jaw-dropping.

Caltrans District 5, which oversees Monterey County where the mudslide happened, also shared a shocking video of the washout site.

According to the Los Angeles Times, the section of Highway 1 will "cost millions of dollars to repair, and it is unclear how long it will take before the roadway is fixed."

This isn't the first time a landslide has taken out a large chunk of the Pacific Coast Highway.

Back in 2017, the "mother of all landslides" buried the roadway and cut off Big Sur from the rest of the world.
