Toddler critically injured after car hit five kids, daycare worker in Oshawa, Ont.
Durham regional police say a two-year-old girl was critically injured when a car struck a group of young children and a daycare worker in Oshawa.
Acting Sgt. Nicholas Gluckstein says the daycare worker was on her daily walk with five children through a residential neighbourhood this morning when they were all struck by a car while crossing the street.
He says the two-year-old girl suffered life-threatening injuries and was taken to a local hospital before being rushed by air ambulance to a Toronto-area trauma centre.
The officer says police are "hoping for the best" but the girl's injuries are "very serious."
The four other children who were hit, ranging in age from three years to just seven months, were hospitalized with minor injuries, Gluckstein said, while the adult daycare worker suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries.
Gluckstein says the driver of the car was heading south and making a left turn through an intersection controlled by two stop signs when they struck the six pedestrians.
"The person driving southbound, there are no stop signs for them to potentially stop and take a look around there. But five children and an adult female crossing the road is a pretty large sight to see," the officer told reporters at the scene, noting investigators are looking into what speed the car was travelling and whether distracted driving played a role in the crash.
Gluckstein said there's no indication the driver, who remained at the scene and is co-operating with police, was impaired.
He said the driver was hospitalized with minor injuries after the crash.
Gluckstein said investigators are exploring possible charges as they continue to speak with witnesses and look to pull surveillance camera footage from residents in the area.
He urged drivers to slow down, obey the rules of the road and be aware of their surroundings.

First Nations say Elections Alberta unprepared for referendum turnout
First Nations in Alberta are celebrating the win for the pro-Canada side in Monday's referendum — but they're also raising concerns about a shortage of ballots in their communities.
About three in four Albertans said yes to Confederation on Monday, while about one in four said they wanted the province to hold a second, binding referendum on leaving.
Siksika Nation says that while it's pleased with the outcome, the polling station in their community was understaffed and didn't receive enough ballots from Elections Alberta, leading to long wait times and "unnecessary obstacles."
Tania Cameron, who helped boost First Nations turnout in the vote, says she was proud to learn several First Nations polling stations had to request more ballots.
She also says Elections Alberta should have been more prepared.
She says not having enough ballots is a slap in the face to community members who wanted their voices heard.

Ottawa will 'not budge' from 'sustainable' immigration levels: Carney
Prime Minister Mark Carney says Ottawa will "not budge" from its goal of making immigration intake numbers sustainable and the federal government is "getting them to that level now."
Carney says he's been in talks with the provinces about getting immigration "to the right levels" as well about how new Canadians can be most effectively distributed across the country and the economy.
His comments come after just over a million Albertans voted yes to a referendum question calling for more provincial control over immigration policy to reduce the number of newcomers to "sustainable levels."
About 53 per cent of voters said 'yes' to that question.
Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre said Tuesday the Liberals have let immigration run "totally out of control" and provinces should have more control over immigration numbers because they have to deliver services for newcomers.
Immigration Minister Lena Diab did not respond to reporters' questions when she walked into the weekly Liberal caucus meeting, but the federal immigration levels are due for an update by next month.

A Wedding Guest Cut The Newlyweds' Cake Just For Herself & TikTok Is Melting Down Over It
"You have no idea how angry this is making me."
Nothing says "pure chaos" like walking up to a newlywed couple's pristine wedding cake and cutting a slice for yourself — before they even get a chance to taste it.
TikTok user @mediocrehailey sparked a major outcry on the app recently, after posting video of herself cutting the first slice of her friend's wedding cake before the bride and groom could even get their moment with it.
And while that sounds like a major power move, it seems she did it entirely by accident.
"Me! A guest at my friend's wedding," reads the caption over her video of the incident, which has gone viral online. "Ignoring the brownie table and confidently cutting myself a slice of HER WEDDING CAKE, thinking uh-oh! They forgot to serve it to everyone else!"
The video shows her not only cutting a slice for herself, but then licking her fingers and dancing away to the DJ's next song, completely unaware of what she's done.
Yikes.
"I know better now," continued her caption. "I hate myself!"
How do you even recover from that, or begin to apologize to the newlyweds?
People did not hold back in the comments, with many ripping her for somehow not reading the room at the wedding. Others were shocked that she shared the embarrassing video on TikTok, where it now has over 5.8 million views.
The top comment under the video read: "You couldn't pry this information out of me if I did this to someone at their wedding," because some things are just better to keep to yourself.
"You have no idea how angry this is making me," wrote another user.
Many users said they would "no longer be on speaking terms" with someone who did this at their wedding.
Another pointed out that "someone was even recording this instead of running up and stopping you."
"Was this your first wedding??" asked another commenter.
Safe to say that people were angry, but it looks like the bride herself managed to get over it.
The poster apologized to the bride and groom in her caption, and the bride showed up in the comments to accept the apology.
"As the bride whose cake this is - SHE IS FORMALLY FORGIVEN AND HAS LEARNED HER LESSON IN WEDDING ETIQUETTE," she wrote.
Phew!
Despite the bride being over the whole kerfuffle, some people are still trying to wrap their minds around the blunder in the first place.
"Omg, so I see that the bride commented forgiving you, but I still need to go through my own emotional process with this one," wrote one user.
So the next time you're at a wedding, learn from this TikToker's mistake and don't help yourself to a slice of cake!
