Ontarians Were Freaking Out As The Ground Literally Shook On Friday Morning (VIDEO)

"The whole kitchen was shaking!"

Earthquakes in Ontario aren't all too common, so when the ground starts shaking, it's understandable that you might be immediately concerned. And that's what happened to Ontario residents near the Windsor-Detroit border on December 13. Reports of concerns about a possible tremor or explosion in the city turned out to be simply the effects of a controlled demolition carried out in Detroit that morning.

Social media was rife with people in the area voicing their fear and concerns about what had happened, as the explosion also affected nearby towns.

According to CTV News, the demolition of an old power plant in Detroit, Michigan, was felt significantly in the Windsor-Essex area, and residents online seemed to agree.

It seems those outside of the city, particularly close to the location on the other side of the border, had no idea the demolition was set to occur.

And it was so strong, it felt eerily like an earthquake.

"What just caused a huge rumble and shaking through Windsor?" asked one tweeter. "Felt like an earthquake for about 15 seconds."

Another concerned resident posted that in his Windsor home, "the whole kitchen was shaking, like a noisy earthquake!"

A video posted by Local 4 News Detroit shows the demolition take place, and you can see why it could be heard, given Windsor is under 4 kilometres away.

The power plant had been out of action since 2008 and its demolition had been scheduled.

In that corner of Ontario, though, CTV reports there were numerous calls to emergency services and local media outlets as people in Windsor and nearby cities panicked.

At shortly before 9:30 a.m. on Friday, the Ontario Provincial Police's West Region Twitter account tweeted an advisory to the public.

It read: "ADVISORY: Numerous reports of loud bangs and ground shaking around Tecumseh area. Controlled demolition occurring in the US. No danger to public safety."

There may have been no danger, but it seems that wasn't clear to those in Windsor and nearby areas.

AM800 News reported it had received numerous calls and quotes one local Ontario resident to illustrate how frightening it was to experience.

"I felt and heard a great big rumble," Karen Phillips told the station. "My windows shook. The floor shook in the house, the sound was deafening. I was scared," she says.

Some callers reported to AM800 News that they heard and/or felt the impact in places as far away as Stoney Point, which is some 40+ kilometres from Windsor.

One tweeter says they felt two distinct rumbles, while using a plane crash as an analogy.

"Was certainly happy to see it was planned, though advance 'heads up' would have been nice," reads part of the tweet.

It certainly sounds like it was pretty alarming for many to experience.

Although some people definitely suggest a heads up would have been great, it did spark something to talk about.

Waking up to a rumble in the house may not have been the most ideal situation but at least it's all over.
