Ontario Students Are Mad At Doug Ford After Taylor Swift Paid For Fan's Tuition

The megastar helped one student, but what about the rest of them?

Right now, being a student in Ontario isn't easy, especially if you have to take out student loans through OSAP. For Ayesha Khurram, though, things got a little easier when Taylor Swift paid her tuition after seeing the Canadian's post on Tumblr.

Of course, most students in Ontario aren't so lucky to have one of the biggest stars in the music industry pay their way. In fact, student debt is at its worst in the province, causing more and more students to declare bankruptcy.

So yes, it's really nice that Taylor Swift told Ayesha, "Get your learn on, girl!" But that doesn't mean that the singer will be offering the same kind of assistance to everyone who is struggling to finish their studies and keep their heads above water.

That may be why OSAP is trending on Twitter today, Aug. 14. It seems that while the story itself is a heartwarming moment of a celebrity reaching out to help a fan, it's also reminding people that, hey, maybe this shouldn't be the solution to a widespread problem.

Many of the tweets in response to this story pointed to Doug Ford's PC party and their cuts to OSAP funding as the root of the problem.

One Twitter user pointed out a few details that were left out from the article, ones that would have better pointed out the shortcomings of Ontario's student loan system.

Other tweets were ambivalent, pointing out both the sincerity and generosity of Swift's gesture while also highlighting the inherent problems with OSAP.

The story itself, as well as the numerous responses to it, really do state the obvious: Ontario students shouldn't have to rely on basically winning the celebrity lottery just to go to school.

Of course, some people took the opportunity to wonder why Taylor Swift didn't help them personally. Turns out there was actually a pretty good reason.

Overall, it's a nice gesture from a huge celebrity that also highlights the shortcomings of a system that is already struggling. Maybe Swift can convince some of her other celebrity friends to help out other Ontario students. The ones who need help wouldn't be hard to find.
