It's The Middle Of February & The Rideau Canal Skateway Still Hasn't Fully Opened

Two more sections of the canal have just been deemed safe for skating.

On Wednesday morning, the National Capital Commission announced that two additional sections of the Rideau Canal Skateway have finally opened to the public. While the total length of the ice path is now 7.4 kilometres, fluctuating temperatures have prevented the whole canal from opening. Organizers are hoping that this weekend's cold weather will help to freeze the remaining water.

In an update on their website at 8 a.m., the National Capital Commission (NCC) confirmed that the stretch of canal between Laurier and Library, including Patterson Creek and the Dows Lake Loop, had officially been reopened to Ottawa’s skaters.

The corporation warned locals that while the new ice had been swept and flooded, it could still be "uneven and bumpy in spots.”

While the new sections of skateable ice takes the total length of skateway to 7.4 kilometres, the 400 metre stretch between the Laurier Avenue Bridge and Rideau Street remains closed.

In an email statement to Narcity, the NCC explained, “Opening the entire length of the Rideau Canal Skateway is always the NCC’s goal."

"Weather (as it determines the thickness of the ice) is one of the main factors that determine how much of the Skateway can be opened and when it can be opened.”

Ottawa’s unusually mild winter season has prevented the ice in some sections of the canal from growing to 30 centimeters thick, which is the safety requirement for public skating.

Since the skateway was reopened for the season at the beginning of the year, Ottawa’s changing temperatures have forced staff to continuously close and reopen sections of the canal.

Back in January, staff on the ice made a hilariously cringey video about the monitoring of the skateway, explaining to locals how they ensure the ice is thick enough.

While the weekend’s wintery weather forecast may put a damper on Valentine’s Day plans, it could certainly help staff at the Rideau Canal properly freeze those last few sections of ice.

The NCC told Narcity, “The NCC team is continuing to work hard to open the remaining 400-metre section.”

“We are optimistic that the low temperatures in the forecast on Thursday and Friday will help."

Time is running out for the entirety of the ice rink to open, with the skateway due to close sometime in March.
